Welcome to my Digitized Thesis
In 2014, I wrote a thesis about cemetery preservation, and researched Sweet Olive Cemetery. Here, parts of my thesis are reproduced, while other parts are memorials and images that I did not include in my thesis.
Sweet Olive Cemetery is the oldest African American cemetery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am a public historian and I wrote my thesis on Sweet Olive Cemetery, the National Register of Historic Places, and the 1970s cemetery preservation movement. A nomination form for the National Register of Historic Places is underway for Sweet Olive, so stay tuned for updates.
My thesis is available at this link: https://www.proquest.com/openview/b25c9648dd75fb1c1cf0698e245103f8/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=18750
Acknowledgements
Thanks to the hard work of Rob and Lois Riley, I was able able to include a chart of some of the graves, found under the tab "The People." The decedents we've identified on that page are just a drop compared to the number of visible graves, and cemetery practices suggest that there are even more not visible.
Row 10 has generously continued the effort to get the cemetery's nomination for the National Register approved.
Starting in 2020, a new group formed that organizes people and supplies to conduct regular cleanup days, to learn more please contact: Markeda Ann Cottonham [email protected]
If you have questions, stories about the cemetery, or family members buried there that you would like to share, email me at [email protected]
